Exploring the Rich History of The Bushmills Inn: A 1600s Coaching Inn Turned Luxury Hotel

Step into The Bushmills Inn, a captivating destination nestled in the village that is home to the world's oldest distillery. Situated between the iconic Giant's Causeway and the renowned Royal Portrush Golf Club, this remarkable establishment has successfully recreated its origins as an old Coaching Inn and Mill House. Join us as we embark on a journey through time, tracing the remarkable story of The Bushmills Inn and its evolution into a luxurious haven.

It all started in 1608:
Delving into the inn's rich history, we discover that the main part of the restaurant was once the coach house and stables of the original Coaching Inn. This section forms the oldest part of the hotel, with its origins dating back close to 1608. It was in this year that "Old Bushmills" was granted the world's first-ever license to distil whiskey, setting the stage for the village's international fame. The main hotel, however, was built in the 1820s as part of a significant redevelopment of the town by Sir Frances Workman Macnaghten, the local landowner. The inn quickly became a cherished stop for weary travellers on their way to the Giant's Causeway, where they would pause to sample the whiskey that made this charming village renowned.

From Decline to Redevelopment:
During the early 1890s, with the advent of a tram link to the Giant's Causeway, the hotel experienced a period of decline. Over the following century, the inn served various purposes, including a boarding house, a private dwelling, a bicycle factory, and even a residence for chickens on the top floor. However, in 1987, extensive redevelopment works were undertaken, breathing new life into The Bushmills Inn. A decade later, the adjoining "Mill House" on the banks of the River Bush was incorporated, adding 22 additional bedrooms. Then, in 2009, a significant expansion took place, elevating the hotel to its current status of 41 spacious bedrooms and luxurious suites. This development also introduced a new courtyard garden, state-of-the-art conference facilities, an exclusive Still Room Cinema, and an extension to the restaurant known as the Garden Room.

Redeveloped to Its Former Glory:
Since its revitalisation, The Bushmills Inn has become the epitome of true Northern Irish hospitality, garnering acclaim from travel writers, television presenters, and esteemed awards for both the hotel and restaurant. With its warm atmosphere, dedication to preserving history, and commitment to luxurious amenities, the inn continues to captivate visitors from around the globe.
