Golf on the Causeway Coast. It’s International Golfer's Day!
Today is International Golfer's Day so there’s no better time to plan a golf trip on the stunning Causeway Coast.
There’s a lot of debate over the history of golf, with many historians placing its origins in 15th century Scotland. Back in those days, players used a pebble instead of a traditional golf ball and played around naturally made courses such as rabbit runs and sand dunes. Thanks to Royal endorsements, it wasn’t long before the wonderful sport spread throughout Europe.
Ireland is one of the best destinations to enjoy a game of golf. Our green island is home to over 400 golf links with more than 90 intricate courses found in Northern Ireland. Each one offers an excellent golfing experience, and although the weather can be unpredictable at times, there’s no better place to enjoy a classic game of golf. Ireland is home to some of the most famous courses in the world, and The Bushmills Inn is the perfect base for the golf enthusiast. Here are some of the most renowned courses within a short distance from our luxurious hotel on the Causeway Coast:
Royal Portrush Golf Club
The Royal Portrush Golf Club is every golfer’s paradise. It was founded in 1888 and is the only club in the country to have hosted The Open Championship. There are two courses to choose from including the Dunluce Course and the pleasant Valley Course. Both courses have 18 holes with stunning views of the North Atlantic. The Dunluce Links offers rough greens along with challenging coastal weather conditions, making it suitable for seasoned golfers. The Valley is located in lavish sand hills, providing plenty of hallows and humps for an exciting game of golf.
Castlerock Golf Club
Founded in 1901, the Castlerock Golf Club is often referred to as “Ireland’s hidden gem” for golf links in the Causeway Coast. With impressive coastal views and two fabulous courses to choose from, this is a fantastic golf course for beginners and professional golfers alike. The Mussenden Course is the largest of the two with 18 holes while The Bann Course has nine holes along the banks of the river Bann.
Portstewart Golf Club
This beautiful golf club is known for its scenery and views of the Donegal hills, the River Bann and the Atlantic. It often hosts significant golf championships including the 2017 Dubai Duty-Free Irish Open by The Rory Foundation. Portstewart Golf Club has 54 holes of golf with three beautiful courses. The Old Course is set along the rocky shore of Portstewart and offers an exciting game for its players. The Strand was designed with championships in mind and is known as the “jewel in Portstewart’s crown”. The third course is the Riverside Course that provides stunning views and includes nine holes that run down to the river.
As you can see, Northern Ireland is home to its fair share of magnificent golf courses. Some others include the Royal County Down Golf Club, which is often ranked as one of the world’s top ten courses with spectacular views of the Mourne Mountains. Another excellent choice is the Ballyliffin Golf Club, which is located on 400 acres of dunes.
The 148th Open Championship
The Royal Portrush Golf Club is set to host the 148th Open Championship from the 14th – 21st July 2019. In its lifespan of 150 years, this incredible occasion marks only the second time that The Open Championship will be held in Northern Ireland.
Sports fans from around the globe are expected to travel to Portrush to celebrate the occasion and watch some of the world’s greatest golfers battle for the Claret Jug.
